Huawei Introduced Experience-Centric Transport Network Solution, Helps in Maintaining High User Experience and Network Performance

BALI,Indonesia,Nov. 20,2018 --November 15 to 16,at South Pacific IP GALA 2018,held in Bali,Huawei introduced its experience-oriented transport network standard and solution, and delivered an end-to-end (E2E) experience-oriented construction solution demo, including evaluation, optimization, maintenance and operation. This network builds a complete network system based on the digital world and physical networks, allowing customers from the industry flexibly construct user experience-oriented networks for a more strategic and longer term network planning considerations for network operators, thus enabling them in optimizing business cost and value.

The ever-growing utilization of mobile devices, from being a 'fun-to-have' device to an essential tool that matters to people's lives, has driven increase in user expectation for more advanced wireless service, such as video and gaming experience, augmented and virtual reality. These services consume more bandwidth and highly dependent on rapid responses from the network; with low transport latency and minimum round-trip time (RTT),resulting in traffic growth that may out pace revenue growth.

For many network operators, today's networks are the sum of many layers of technology that have been deployed over time and consist of a mix of technologies, physical medium, encapsulation techniques, and equipments. While operators must employ to continue to deliver a high-quality user experience to their key constituencies and high visibility over consequential issues to service performance, they are also required to optimize the network in a capital efficient manner. On the other hand, operators must be aware of the emerging challenges of 5G. Despite promising vast opportunity for operators, such as new applications and business models, the upcoming era of 5G may also come with many network performance challenges, like network transport latency.

Faced with such a complex requirements, many operators currently still use simple and single indicators to guide network expansion, such as hourly link utilization. It's unable to meet the requirements of the best user experience. After intensive cooperation with Huawei's South Pacific region,OVUM has released a white paper "Optimizing the Transport Network for a Better User Experience". In the white paper, the problems of current network assessment and planning methods are elaborated. And the recommendations based on the packet loss and delay evaluation network are given.

"Through the experience-oriented network standards and solutions which Huawei and OVUM jointly released in SP IPGALA 2018,we hope operators could clarify network construction ideas, set network construction standards,to improve user experience and achieve business success," said Mr. Hou Wei,Vice President SP Region Huawei.

Mr. Hou Wei continued that the industry and many operators has tried various methods to optimize user experience in the industry. "However,if the "black hole" of the bearer network is not resolved, other optimization effects will be consumed. However, the bearer network is very complex. It is not easy to find the experience bottleneck and solve the problem. This requires strong R&D capabilities in the E2E network, and has the capability of digitalization, intelligence, and AI automatic learning, which Huawei has such capabilities".

Optimizing user experience in a capital efficient manner requires specific standards and approaches

With LTE and 5G to come, the radio access networks are capable of higher speeds, and services come with Ultra-Reliable Low Latency (URLL) requirements and users demand higher network availability. Traffic has become more unpredictable and shifts geographic locations. Earlier generations of service assurance sampling techniques are not able to keep pace with the new more dynamic environment.

Traditional service assurance sampling, historically,is conducted at the intervals of minutes to hours. Packet loss ratio (PLR) over the lengthier intervals can be within acceptable thresholds over the timeframe of the whole interval. The weakness of the approach is that very short term busy traffic events may cause short term packet loss and often result in a negative user experience event that occurs immediately. Although it can be detected by the user,in the contrary,it may go undetected by the network operator.

On the other hand, analysing only on bearer network performance of one network segment, for example, the wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) network, micro wave (MW) network or internet protocol (IP) network, does not give full visibility over E2E user experience to the network's bottlenecks. Thus, for different service scenarios, operators need to employ different approaches and standards.

Strategic network planning considerations for network operators

To design an optimum network, operators need to fine-tune a balance proportion of provision that will result in minimum congestion, while maintaining high quality user experience and optimum expenditure saving. They need to understand the bearer key indicators in detail, such as packet loss, the packet loss ratio (PLR),round trip time (RTT)-network delay-latency and delay variation-jitter. These indicators are determined by different factors, such as bandwidth utilization, equipment, technology, and topology.

Network operators also need to focus on optimizing path constraints at the core and aggregation layers to optimize traffic and transmission control protocol (TCP) parameter settings and minimize network hops. They need to get a better understanding on the state of the network and identify with a fine-grained precision, the network bottlenecks and recurring congestion problem spots. With an improved network visibility, network operators can consider courses of action for remediation.

At this two-day demo-intensive South Pacific IP GALA 2018 held in Bali,Huawei brought about a number of industry experts, from Internet Engineering Task Force,LGU+,OVUM,and speakers from various regional service provider operators and Huawei's solution experts, who deliver keynotes on 5G-ready network and transport and discuss on 5G target network architecture and best 4G/5G experience network construction standards, followed with demo visit on the first day. Huawei also bring forth a key topic on simplified and intelligent converged network that examines on IDN intelligent network evolution and future IP technical standards.

In a move to ultimately helping operators in Asia Pacific to accelerate their digital transformation and further gain business success,on the second day of gala,Huawei also delivers a deep dive workshop on 5G-Ready transport and experience-centric network and its SD-WAN solution that provides enterprise customers with interconnection services suitable for convergence in the all-cloud era, helping enterprises intelligently connect to the cloud, followed with a demo visit.
