IoT has great potential in improving operational performance, transforming business activities, and even stimulating new business models. The HKSAR Government, business and community sectors are all playing an integral part in the ecosystem to catalyse more localised IoT applications and realise the next chapter of economic growth. Inaugurating the Hong Kong IoT Conference,Mr. Yang said "The rapid advancement of IoT technologies is creating endless possibilities for enterprises and the Government. We are also pushing ahead a number of key infrastructure projects to support such developments. These include installation of Multi-functional Smart Lampposts, provision of electronic identity or eID to all Hong Kong residents starting in 2020,promoting the use of Building Information Modelling, and the deployment of a Common Spatial Data Infrastructure (CSDI). Let us work together to embrace and leverage these new technologies to better serve the Hong Kong public."

IoT can drive increased connectivity of "things",which leads to massive data collection. To harness the true value of IoT,Mr. Bien believed that "The data collected from IoT devices can help companies gain insight into the productivity and performance of their systems and processes, offering opportunities for innovation and growth,or even disruptive company model. It is important for every company to possess the professional skills and strategy to understand and make use of those data, allowing company to make data-driven business decision."

Fragmented ecosystem of standards, devices and services is slowing enterprise IoT deployments. Addressing the issue,Ms. Lin highlighted the importance of open, global standards.
