2019 ASEAN Chairmanship Hosts Timely Energy Business Forum in Thailand, September 2019

BANGKOK,July 29,2019 -- Energy systems globally are being re-examined due to a combination of populist and geopolitical pressures. Gas is set to play a major role in transitioning to a lower-carbon future, while the cost of renewables, driven by advances in technology, have reached lower levels than ever before. Most serious predictions of the long-term global energy mix, however, see renewable energy contributing little over 15% in the next 20 years. In Asia, though, the winds of change are beginning to blow a little more firmly. The FT commented recently,in the absence of a serious consolidation of the renewables sector in Europe and the US,we may soon find that the worldwide transition to lower carbon economy is a project led by Asia.

South East Asia's appetite for energy will see its demand grow by an incredible two thirds in the next 20 years. By 2030,it is anticipated that the ASEAN will become the fourth largest energy consumer in the world. Across the region,a combination of dwindling domestic resources and environmental concerns are driving governments and the market to explore their energy options. While coal is set to play a role in ASEAN (5 ASEAN members are in the top 20 investors in new coal capacity),member states are increasingly developing policies that bring renewables and natural gas/liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the fore.

Many ASEAN countries have traditionally been LNG exporters, this is now reversing as these countries reserve ever increasing amounts of LNG for local use. Despite a lower than forecasted rise in LNG demand in recent years, the demand fundamentals in ASEAN remain strong and LNG demand in the region is expected to grow to fivefold (IEEJ,2018),and in some predictions by as much as seven times (McKinsey forecast 76Mtpa),by 2030.

ASEAN has set shared target for renewables to form 23% of the energy mix by 2025,and while many will see this as ambitious, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the ASEAN Centre for Energy's (ACE) 2016 report showed this is achievable with significant potential from solar PV,wind power and geothermal capacity to contribute to the existing renewable power capacity.

Thailand, which is more than halfway to its targets for installed solar capacity for 2030,recently approved the Power Development Plan (PDP) 2018 - 2037,providing the framework for Thailand's future energy strategy and its continuous progress in transitioning to renewable energy. Under this new PDP,Thailand's power production capacity will increase by 67% by 2037,with 56,431 MW from newly installed capacity (of which 37% will be renewable power). By 2037,the country's power production is expected to come from natural gas (53 percent),non-fossil fuels (35 percent),and coal (12 percent).

In order to meet the region's growing needs for energy supply, transmission and efficiency, the IEA has estimated that US$2.7 trillion investment will be required. ASEAN nations must develop the policy and regulatory frameworks that will facilitate the transition to a lower-carbon future and encourage the international support and active participation of the private sector who are so vital to achieving successful outcomes. Integration and collaboration, meanwhile, are important tools in lowering energy costs, diversifying supply, and tapping into renewable and low carbon energy resources.

On 3-5 September 2019,Thailand,as ASEAN Chairman for 2019 will host the ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF) in conjunction with the 37th annual ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) at the The Athenee Hotel,Bangkok,Thailand. The ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) and dmg events have been engaged by the Ministry of Energy,to work in partnership in the delivery of this important meeting.

In an official letter of endorsement Dr. Sarawut Kaewtathip,Deputy Permanent Secretary and SOE Leader from the Ministry of Energy,Thailand states that "all regional and international stakeholders seeking to play a role in ASEAN energy future to officially support AEBF 2019 and highlight your business's position at the forefront of the region's energy transition, collaboration and integration."

Forum attendees are encouraged to participate in discussions and share their experiences and expertise with member states, through a series of one-to-one meetings,at a critical point in ASEAN's journey to a sustainable energy future.
