The prefectural government and the university, which signed a memorandum of understanding on mutual exchanges in 2019,jointly organized the exhibition as this year marks the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China.

On display are about 180 excavated articles and other items, which allow visitors to look back on the history of Japan-China exchanges since ancient times and to deepen their understanding of Nara that symbolizes cultural exchanges between the two nations.

Nara Prefecture is a region heralding the start of Japan's history. Nara is also known as ancient Japan's center as it was the country's capital in the seventh and eighth centuries. Cultural assets that have been handed down in Nara were all produced against the backdrop of East-West exchanges in ancient Asia. Nara has maintained particularly close relations with Japan's neighboring country of China, which serves as a basis for current bilateral ties.

In the prefecture, there are still numerous temples, shrines, historical sites and cultural properties that are closely related to China, including the relics of Heijo-kyo,Japan's ancient capital modeled on Changan or the traditional name of Xian today,in the city of Nara and neighboring areas as well as the Takamatsuzuka Tumulus in the prefectural village of Asuka, which experts say has been influenced by ancient Asia.

The Nara Prefectural Government hopes that Chinese people will rediscover the beauty and spirituality linking the two countries at the exhibition and, when they come to Japan, will visit Nara Prefecture, which still retains remnants of Japan-China exchanges in ancient times.
