Dr Ronald McCoy-- who helped establish the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons-- addressed the Commonwealth Association of Leadership,Malaysia (CALM) in Kota Kinabalu,Sabah.
He said the number of nuclear weapons had fallen from a high of 68,000 in 1985 to about 15,000 today.
"The use of one nuclear weapon could kill hundreds of thousands of people-- one nuclear weapon is one too many," said Dr McCoy. "We owe it to our children and their children to do whatever it takes to rid the world of this menace," he said.
Dr McCoy was the guest of honour at the CALM 'pop-up' in Sabah. He co-founded the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons that won the Nobel Peace Prize last year.
CALM was established earlier this year to help nurture and develop future business, government and non-government organisation leaders in Malaysia. CALM works closely with the Duke of Edinburgh Commonwealth Study Conferences (CSC).
The Chair of CALM,Hanaa Wong Abdullah, says the involvement of people like Dr McCoy at the weekend pop-up event reflects the growing importance of the Commonwealth to the future of Malaysia.
"This organisation is committed to helping develop leaders across government, industry and non-government organisations in Malaysia who smarter, more ethical and globally inspired.
"These are the types of leaders we need today to help deal with the significant and varied challenges that we face," said Ms Wong Abdullah.
Planning is underway for the next leadership pop-up event,to be held in Kuala Lumpur,in the New Year.
