Green is the New Black at Hyatt Regency Bali
BALI,Indonesia,Aug. 27,2019 -- When Hyatt Regency Bali reopened in 2018,the hotel aimed to retain the Old World charm of Bali for today's people. The idea was simple. We would like to remind our guests of how Bali felt like in the 70s and 80s- lush, laidback and pure, and a big part of this initiative involves keeping the hotel as local and green as possible.

In recent years,Bali has been facing an issue with pollution, wherein huge piles of plastic wastes and trash end up on the beaches all over the island. Right from the start,Director of Food and Beverage Stijn van Leeuwen,Executive Chef Nadine Waechter Moreno,Purchasing Manager Ida Bagus Wirawan and General Manager Zulki Othman are committed to minimising the use of plastic products.
"We would like to be part of the solution and not add to the (plastic) problem. We want to keep our beautiful island free of plastics," adds Mr Wirawan,Purchasing Manager.
The attempt to lessen the use of plastics is a joint effort across departments. For instance, the Rooms and F&B departments will replace plastic items with alternative materials, such us using glass bottles instead of plastic bottles,or paper straws in place of plastic straws. Our bamboo toothbrush, stirrer and skewer prove to be a great alternative to their plastic counterpart.
Got food to take away? The team will deliver it in a recyclable box from bagasse (sugar cane pulp) with bamboo utensils placed in a nice paper bag. Our coffee cup and its lid are made from corn starch. In the bathroom, each amenity is wrapped in paper packaging, and bath products are placed in pump bottles instead of single-use plastic packaging.
Even the Sales team's giveaway includes reusable bamboo utensils packaged in recycled batik fabric and shopping bag made from recycled fabric, something that clients appreciate and praise.
In line with keeping the hotel an environment-friendly establishment, our team is also committed to using locally sourced ingredients. Using local ingredients not only ensures freshness, but also contributes to economic development in the local community and minimising the hotel's carbon footprint.
"At the moment, close to 70% of the food items we use in the hotel, including coffee, cheese, chocolate, honey, and vegetables, come from local sources. Our fish even comes from neighbour fishermen 5 minutes walk from our beach," said Mr Wirawan,Purchasing Manager.
